Campen – Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1582)

Frans Hogenberg was a Brabant cartographer and Georg Braun a German writer. After Hogenberg fled the Netherlands, he settled in Cologne. Together they published the six-volume famous city atlases Civitates orbis terrarum.

Civitates orbis terrarum was published from 1572 to 1617. Each volume had many, largely unchanged reprints. Cityscapes and city maps were accompanied by brief descriptions in Latin. Later German and French editions also appeared. The series was a success throughout Europe and was seen as a complement to Ortelius’ famous world atlas.
