Anton Martineau was a Dutch visual artist and poet. He worked as a painter, draughtsman, graphic artist and sculptor in the style of figurative expressionism. He grew up in the vicinity of the Red Light District in Amsterdam and in his youth learned from his father, who was a house painter, to make simple decorations such as plant and animal shapes for decoration and advertising.
Subjects in his work are people, dancing couples, tango, eroticism, drama of love and death, joy and fear, absurd portraits and still lifes. Women and the feminine dominate the masculine in his emotionally charged work. Against the oppressiveness of education, he paints the delightful, the licentious, the liberating.
Martineau has exhibited in major art galleries and museums around the world and was internationally recognized for his contributions to art history.
