Jodocus Hondius (Dutch name: Joost de Hondt) was a Flemish cartographer, active in London and Amsterdam and best known for republishing the atlases of Gerardus Mercator. Around 1604, Hondius studied mathematics in Leiden. There, partly on the advice of Petrus Bertius, he bought the plates from Mercator’s estate. Supplemented by 36 new maps, a reissue of the now-named Mercator-Hondius Atlas came on the market in 1606. This became a great success.
