Original engraving from the book “Spiegel van het menselyk bedryf” published in 1694 by Jan Luyken together with his son Casper Luyken.
The book describes the work of a hundred crafts in Amsterdam during the Golden Age. It is a so-called emblematic book in the tradition of Jacob Cats. An emblem is a small image that has a meaning in it, accompanied by a short pithy saying or poem.
You have surely come across a copy of one of these images at some point. Time to purchase an original?
